Is contribution margin the same as gross margin?
Not necessarily. Gross margin follows the cost-of-goods-sold classification, while contribution margin subtracts costs based on whether they vary with the modeled activity.
Should sales commissions be included in variable cost?
Include them when they are earned per sale or as a percentage of sales and therefore change with the modeled volume.
What happens if variable cost is greater than price?
Contribution per unit becomes negative, so additional sales increase the modeled operating loss before any strategic or capacity effects.
Can this result be used to set a final price?
