Frequently asked questions
Why can EBITDA be positive while cash falls?
Receivable growth, inventory purchases, capital spending, cash taxes, interest, debt repayment, and other cash flows can consume more cash than EBITDA suggests.
Is EBITDA margin comparable across all businesses?
No. Accounting classifications, leases, capital intensity, revenue recognition, business mix, and company-specific adjustments can make direct comparisons misleading.
Should depreciation always be ignored?
No. It is noncash in the current period but often reflects assets that require past or future capital investment.
What if modeled EBITDA is zero or negative?
Margin can still be calculated when revenue is nonzero, but the revenue-to-EBITDA multiple becomes unstable or not economically meaningful.
