Preparation logic

A partial day is not automatically a full preparation night

The model floors the countdown to complete 24-hour opportunities. That avoids claiming a full pre-adaptation step when only a few waking hours remain before takeoff.

Pre-shifting and reducing sleep deficit are parallel workstreams. A well-rested traveler can still depart with a large residual time-zone displacement, and a well-shifted traveler can still carry sleep debt.

Model limitations

The countdown is a planning estimate, not a medical or fatigue-risk clearance. It does not prescribe light, melatonin, medication, or sleep timing and does not model connection delays, overnight duty, sleep disorders, or individual chronotype.

Why does the calculator count complete nights?

A full preparation step requires a usable sleep-wake opportunity; counting fractional countdown days as full nights would overstate capacity.

Can extra sleep remove jet lag?

It can reduce sleep deficit but does not by itself align the circadian clock with destination time.

Why is flight sleep entered separately?

In-flight sleep happens after the preparation countdown and changes arrival sleep debt, not the amount of pre-departure clock shift.

What if I have no preparation time?

The model shows zero pre-shift and carries the full clock displacement into the destination plan.
