Five ideas keep completion and performance distinct

Assignment completion
The share of scheduled assignments with a result, independent of score quality.
Weighted contribution
Course percentage points earned after an assignment's declared course weight is applied.
Calendar fraction
The portion of the teaching or assessment period that has elapsed.
Pace variance
Completion fraction minus elapsed calendar fraction, in percentage points.

The method treats the course basis as 100 percentage points and does not silently reweight missing or dropped work.

Where the pace signal can change meaning

Front-loaded courses

If early assignments carry more weight, completion pace can overstate the contribution still available. Use the ledger weights when the course is not evenly distributed.

Reachability

A target gap is not a promise. Compare it with the maximum remaining contribution permitted by the syllabus and with realistic performance evidence.

Calendar mismatch

Breaks, extensions, and rolling deadlines change the time fraction. Freeze the calendar definition before comparing two checkpoints.

DETAILED CALCULATION PROCESS

Default values, intermediate results, and reconciliation

  1. General formula: c/n, e/100, p−t, and max(0,g−e)/(1−t).
  2. Plain language: count completion, preserve grade contribution, compare with calendar, then size the open target.
  3. Symbols: c and n are counts; e and g are percentage points; p and t are dimensionless fractions.
  4. Defaults: c=6, n=10, e=48, t=0.55, g=85.
  5. Conversions: 55% becomes 0.55; 60% completion becomes 0.60.
  6. Substitution: p=6/10=0.60; pace=0.60−0.55=0.05.
  7. Intermediate: remaining contribution = max(0,85−48)=37 points.
  8. Final result: 37/0.45 = 82.222 points per remaining course fraction.
  9. Reverse check: 48+37=85 target points when the target remains open.
  10. Reasonableness: a positive pace with a large remaining requirement calls for a workload review, not automatic reassurance.

RESULT INTERPRETATION

Use each output for a different decision

High completion with low earned contribution suggests a performance problem; low completion with a strong earned contribution suggests the remaining workload is the key risk. A negative pace variance is a calendar warning, not a grade.

WORKED DECISION CASES

Two different checkpoints

Behind on count, ahead on points

A student has completed 40% of assignments but earned 52 weighted points. The schedule needs protection, while the target gap may still be modest.

On calendar, short on contribution

A course is 75% elapsed and the gradebook shows 62 points. The correct question is whether the remaining syllabus weight can supply the 23-point target gap.

Retain the dated syllabus, assignment list, inclusion or drop rules, gradebook snapshot, calendar definition, and any approved extension. A copied result without its denominator cannot be audited.

Assignment weight progress questions

Does completion equal the weighted grade?

No. Completion counts finished assignments; weighted progress uses the earned course contribution.

What does a negative pace variance mean?

It means the entered completion share is behind the calendar fraction, not that the grade is negative.

Can I use this for dropped assignments?

Only after the syllabus confirms which assignments are excluded from both the count and the course basis.

What if the target is already secured?

The remaining contribution is zero and the forward requirement is shown as secured rather than negative.
