The default uses readings of 1,248.2 and 1,264.8 m3 over 31 days, a $2.60/m3 water rate, sewer equal to 115% of water charges, $24 fixed fees, and 3% tax.

Worked substitution with the default inputs

1. Calculate metered consumption: D = 1,264.8 - 1,248.2 = 16.6 m3; V = max(16.6, 0) = 16.6 m3 The default readings are ordered normally, so the signed change becomes billed consumption unchanged.
2. Normalize daily use: L_d = 16.6 x 1,000/31 = 535.4839 liters/day The cubic-meter change is converted to liters and divided by the exact billing period.
3. Calculate variable charges: W = 16.6 x $2.60 = $43.16; S = $43.16 x 115/100 = $49.634 The sewer multiplier applies to the water usage charge, not directly to meter volume.
4. Add fixed fees and tax: B = $43.16 + $49.634 + $24 = $116.794; T = $116.794 x 3/100 = $3.50382; P = $120.29782 The default modeled bill rounds to about $120.30 for display.

Frequently asked questions

What if the closing reading is lower?

The calculator exposes a negative signed change but floors billed consumption to zero. Check for rollover, meter replacement, register change, or input error before using the bill result.

Why is sewer higher than water?

The default multiplier is 115%, so sewer is modeled as 1.15 times the water usage charge. The actual utility may use a different formula.

Does daily average include outdoor use?

Yes, if irrigation or another outdoor use passed through the same meter during the reading interval.

Does the effective variable rate include fixed fees and tax?

No. It equals the entered water rate plus the sewer rate implied by its multiplier. Fixed fees and tax remain separate in the bill total.

Why can the real bill differ after the meter change matches?

Tier thresholds, minimums, meter multipliers, separate sewer rules, estimated-read corrections, credits, arrears, tax bases, and utility rounding can all change the statement.
