What the rates measure

A category rate is its weekly amount divided by weekly take-home income. The total assigned rate reveals whether the plan consumes less than, exactly, or more than current income.

Sinking funds are assignments for known future costs, not the same as unrestricted savings.

Read rates in context

A high fixed-cost rate indicates less room to react when income falls. A high savings rate may be healthy only if essential estimates are realistic.

A negative margin rate means more than 100% of income has been assigned.

Should employer retirement contributions be included?
