Shift schedules often split sleep into a main window and a nap window. This calculator distinguishes scheduled opportunity from estimated sleep by removing wind-down, latency, and waking time before comparing the two windows with a selected total target.

Calculation method

How the calculation works

Convert main and nap opportunities into estimated sleep by subtracting entered wind-down, latency, and awake time, then compare with a selected target. Subtract wind-down, main sleep latency, and expected waking from the main opportunity after converting minutes to hours. Subtract nap latency from the nap opportunity, floor both sleep estimates at zero, add them, and divide total estimated sleep by total scheduled opportunity.

Reconcile main sleep and nap opportunity

Each sleep window is calculated separately so non-sleep time in one window cannot be hidden by the other.

General formula: S_main = max[W_main - (D + L_main + A_main) / 60, 0]; S_nap = max(W_nap - L_nap / 60, 0); S_total = S_main + S_nap Deduct preparation, latency, and awake time from the main window; deduct latency from the nap window; then add the two nonnegative sleep estimates.

Worked substitution with the default inputs

1. Combine main-window deductions: (30 + 20 + 25) / 60 = 1.25 hours Wind-down, main latency, and expected waking are converted from minutes to hours.
2. Estimate main sleep: max(6.5 - 1.25, 0) = 5.25 hours The main opportunity is reduced only by the three main-window deductions.
3. Estimate nap sleep: max(1.5 - 15 / 60, 0) = 1.25 hours Nap latency is deducted from the separate nap opportunity.
4. Add estimated sleep: 5.25 + 1.25 = 6.50 hours The split-window estimate is the sum of nonnegative main and nap sleep.
5. Compare opportunity and target: 6.50 / (6.5 + 1.5) x 100 = 81.25%; 7.5 - 6.5 = 1.0 hour Efficiency uses eight scheduled opportunity hours, while the target gap uses the selected 7.5-hour sleep target.

The default schedule offers 8.0 total hours but models 6.5 hours of sleep after deductions, leaving a 1.0-hour target gap.

Frequently asked questions

Why is wind-down subtracted only from main sleep?

The data model assigns it to the main window; any nap preparation should be reflected by a realistic nap latency or smaller nap opportunity.

Can a longer nap close the target gap?

It can in the arithmetic, but actual sleep, circadian timing, sleep inertia, and work constraints still matter.

Why floor each window at zero?

Deductions cannot create negative sleep; a zero result instead signals that the entered opportunity is fully consumed.

Does 100% opportunity efficiency prove good sleep?

No. It would only mean no entered deductions, not that sleep quality or alertness is adequate.
