WHY TWO LEDGERS
A long weekend night does not prove full physiologic recovery
Arithmetic net difference can cancel a short night with a long night, but recovery is not a bank transfer. The page therefore reports gross shortfall and surplus separately.
Sleep need varies, and duration alone cannot identify insomnia, sleep apnea, circadian misalignment, medication effects, or impairment.

Why does surplus not erase gross debt?
The two totals answer different arithmetic questions, and physiologic recovery is not known from duration alone.
Should every adult target eight hours?
No. AASM recommends seven or more hours for healthy adults, while individual needs vary.
Do naps count?
They can if your target is defined as total 24-hour sleep; use one definition consistently.
Can the calculator detect sleep apnea?
No. Symptoms such as loud snoring, gasping, witnessed pauses, or persistent sleepiness require clinical assessment.
