This planner treats recent sleep shortfall as transparent arithmetic: a selected nightly target minus recent average sleep, multiplied across observed nights. It then tests how much of that total could be addressed by a gradual plan subject to an entered nightly cap.

How the calculation works

Calculate an arithmetic sleep shortfall and distribute it across recovery nights subject to an entered maximum extra-sleep allowance. Subtract recent average sleep from the selected nightly target and floor the difference at zero. Multiply by observed nights, divide that shortfall across recovery nights, cap extra sleep at the entered nightly maximum, and compare total planned extra time with the arithmetic shortfall.

Worked substitution with the default inputs

1. Find nightly shortfall: max(8.0 - 6.7, 0) = 1.3 hours/night Only sleep below the selected target contributes to the arithmetic shortfall.
2. Accumulate the observation window: 1.3 x 7 = 9.1 hours The model assumes the recent average represents each of the seven observed nights.
3. Spread shortfall evenly: 9.1 / 10 = 0.91 hours/night This is the even extra time required across ten recovery nights before applying the cap.
4. Apply the nightly cap: min(0.91, 1.00) = 0.91 hours/night The entered maximum does not bind in the default scenario because the even allocation is smaller.
5. Reconcile the plan: 0.91 x 10 = 9.1; max(9.1 - 9.1, 0) = 0 hours The planned extra time addresses the complete arithmetic shortfall under the model.

The default plan adds 0.91 hour to the 7.5-hour future baseline, producing an 8.41-hour nightly opportunity and zero arithmetic shortfall remaining after ten nights.
