How the calculation works

Multiply recorded steps by an entered average stride length, preserve a step-count error range, and calculate speed, cadence, and a separate MET energy estimate. Multiply steps by stride length in centimetres and divide by 100,000 to convert centimetres to kilometres. Apply the entered percentage error to distance, divide distance by walking hours for speed, divide steps by minutes for cadence, and use the entered MET value for a separate gross-energy estimate.

The default derivation keeps the step-distance conversion independent from the time and MET extensions.

General formula: Distance_km = Steps x Stride_cm / 100,000; Speed = Distance_km / (Minutes / 60); Cadence = Steps / Minutes Multiply steps by stride length, convert centimeters to kilometers, then divide by elapsed hours for speed and by elapsed minutes for cadence.

Worked substitution with the default inputs

1. Convert stride length: 72 cm / 100 = 0.72 m per step This provides the directly interpretable metres-per-step output.
2. Calculate distance: 10,000 x 72 / 100,000 = 7.20 km One kilometre contains 100,000 centimetres, so the product converts directly to kilometres.
3. Apply the error allowance: 7.20 x (1 - 0.05) = 6.84 km; 7.20 x (1 + 0.05) = 7.56 km The same plus-or-minus five percent is applied symmetrically around the central estimate.
4. Calculate speed and cadence: 7.20 / (95 / 60) = 4.55 km/h; 10,000 / 95 = 105.26 steps/min Walking minutes are converted to hours for speed but remain minutes for cadence.
5. Estimate gross energy: 3.5 MET x 3.5 x 72 / 200 x 95 = 418.95 kcal The MET extension uses body weight and duration and is separate from the stride-based distance calculation.

The defaults produce 7.20 km, a 6.84-7.56 km device-error interval, 4.55 km/h average speed, 105.26 steps/min cadence, and 418.95 kcal gross MET estimate.
