Use measured losses where possible and label assumptions where not

  2. Use a measured sweat rate for exercise when one is available.
  3. Add heat or altitude only when those exposures are actually present.
  4. Estimate food water once; do not also subtract individual foods later.

Source accounting

Total water and plain drinking water are not the same quantity

Dietary reference values describe total water from water, other beverages, and moisture in food. This calculator therefore shows both total water and the portion expected to come from drinks.

Exercise loss is individualized because sweat rates vary substantially. A measured pre/post-exercise body-mass method is more informative than assuming every person loses the same amount per hour.

Does coffee or tea count toward beverages?

Many beverages contribute water, but this calculator does not assess caffeine, alcohol, sugar, or medical suitability.

Why is food water subtracted?

Because the total-water estimate includes moisture from food; subtracting it avoids treating the whole estimate as drinking water.

Is 35 mL/kg a universal recommendation?

No. It is an editable planning factor, not a universal requirement.

Can I use the exercise number every day?

Only on days with comparable exercise duration, intensity, and environmental conditions.
