How to use the organic search forecast calculator

Forecast a governed query portfolio instead of one growth percentage

  1. Freeze a non-brand query set and record the same device, country, and search-engine scope for every input.
  2. Enter indexed, top-20, top-10, and top-3 shares as cumulative checkpoints from one measurement date.
  3. Estimate technical repair, promotion, and regression rates from comparable monthly query cohorts.
  4. Replace the three rank-band CTR defaults with demand-weighted evidence from the same query portfolio.
  5. Review the monthly ledger to confirm every query remains in one—and only one—state.
  6. Treat the forecast as a planning baseline and compare actual monthly transitions with the modeled path.

Transition discipline

Repairs, promotions, and regressions must reconcile

Technical repair moves a portion of the not-indexed state into indexed coverage; it does not jump those queries directly into the top 10. Promotion moves a share of each eligible state one band upward, while regression moves a share of ranked states one band downward. Each movement is subtracted from its source before being added to its destination.

The monthly table is the conservation audit: the five state counts should always sum to the entered tracked-query total apart from harmless display rounding.

Demand and response

A ranking movement is not automatically a traffic movement

Estimated sessions depend on both the number of queries in each rank band and the average demand represented by those queries. Moving low-volume terms into the top three can add less traffic than improving a smaller number of high-demand commercial terms from page two to the lower first page.

CTR is also conditional on device mix, SERP features, brand recognition, title and snippet quality, and the position distribution inside each broad band. Refresh the CTR inputs when those conditions change.

Forecast governance

Use variance from the modeled state path as evidence

Compare actual state counts with the monthly ledger, then diagnose the transition that missed: technical repairs may not have shipped, promotion may be slower, regression may be stronger, or the tracked query universe may have changed. Do not overwrite the historical baseline merely to make the forecast appear accurate.

Build transition rates from query cohorts

  • Use a stable non-brand query set.
  • Measure transitions between exclusive bands.
  • Separate new URLs from repaired URLs.
  • Use demand-weighted CTR when possible.

Model limitations

Rank states are a portfolio abstraction

The model excludes query-level demand variation, seasonality, SERP features, device mix, new keywords, cannibalization, algorithm shocks, and page-specific probability.

A checkpoint such as top-10 share that contains every query ranking in positions 1 through 10.
Demand-weighted CTR
A click-through rate weighted by the search demand represented by queries in a rank band.
Indexation repair
A technical or content correction that returns an intended page to search eligibility.
Promotion rate
The monthly share of a source state modeled to move one rank band upward.
Regression rate
The monthly share of ranked queries modeled to move one band downward.
Rank state
One mutually exclusive visibility band occupied by a tracked query in a given month.
State conservation
The rule that all exclusive state counts continue to sum to the fixed tracked-query population.

This deterministic portfolio forecast excludes query-level dispersion, seasonality not entered by the user, SERP feature changes, competitor response, cannibalization, algorithm changes, release delays, sales-cycle lag, and causal attribution.
