    HOW TO USE

    Five steps from official odds to a recorded decision

    1. Enter the number of tickets you are actually considering, not a hypothetical lifetime total.
    2. Copy the official jackpot and any-prize odds denominators for the exact game and draw format.
    3. Enter ticket cost and a hard entertainment budget in the same currency.
    4. Read at-least-one probability separately from expected jackpot count; they answer different questions.
    5. Save the current ledger before purchase so later review uses the assumptions available at the decision time.

    What this risk number does and does not mean

    Complement rule
    The chance of at least one event is one minus the chance that every independent ticket misses.
    Independence
    The power formula assumes ticket outcomes are independent under the game rules; shared or duplicated selections do not improve the draw mechanism.
    Odds denominator
    "1 in D" becomes the decimal probability 1/D. Enter D, not the decimal probability.
    Expected count
    n/D is a long-run average count, not a promise and not the probability of at least one jackpot.
    Budget boundary
    Probability describes chance; the spend-versus-budget result describes affordability and remains decisive even when chance increases.

    Three traps hidden behind a larger ticket count

    Why buying more barely moves jackpot risk

    For very large D, the first tickets add approximately 1/D each. A larger n helps linearly at first but the absolute probability can remain tiny.

    Any prize is not profit

    The any-prize event may include awards below ticket cost. This page intentionally reports event frequency, not payout value or return on spend.

    The 50% ticket count is diagnostic

    The median-wait ticket count exposes scale. It is not a purchase recommendation and can imply an unaffordable outlay.

    Ten-ticket office pool

    Ten $2 tickets against 1-in-292,201,338 jackpot odds produce a minuscule jackpot chance while using the full $20 budget. The useful decision is the explicit budget record, not an apparent percentage increase from one ticket.

    Zero entertainment budget

    A $0 budget with any positive ticket count is mathematically valid for risk but fails the spending boundary. The negative budget variance makes the conflict visible without suppressing the probability calculation.

    MODEL LIMITS

    Where the lottery-risk model stops

    • Assumes each ticket is an independent trial with stable published odds.
    • Does not model prize tiers, taxes, annuity choices, jackpot sharing, retailer rules, or expected payout.
    • Any-prize odds must correspond to the same game and ticket format as the jackpot odds.
    • A budget variance is a planning boundary, not financial advice or a safeguard against compulsive gambling.

    FAQ

    Questions specific to lottery risk

    Does choosing different numbers change these odds?

    Not when each valid selection has the same official chance. Different picks may affect prize sharing, but they do not change the draw probability modeled here.

    Why is expected jackpots smaller than jackpot probability?

    At tiny probabilities they are close, but expected count can exceed one while probability is always capped at 100%. They are different measures.

    Can I enter subscription tickets?

    Yes, if the ticket count represents independent future entries and the odds format stays unchanged. Record rule changes separately.

    Does the any-prize result mean I break even?

    No. It includes all awards covered by the entered any-prize odds, including prizes worth less than total spend.

    Why show tickets for a 50% jackpot chance?

    It gives a scale check using the same complement formula. It is intentionally separated from the budget recommendation.

    Can this predict the next winning ticket?

    No. It calculates probabilities from entered published odds; it cannot identify a winning combination or change a random draw.

    IMPORTANT NOTE
