Keep the box score internally valid
- Made shots cannot exceed attempts.
- Team minutes must match the segment being analyzed.
- The 0.44 coefficient estimates multi-shot and technical free-throw possessions; it is not exact play-by-play possession counting.
Limitations and interpretation
This calculator evaluates an entered scoring line, not defense, lineup context, shot quality, opponent strength, or win probability. Estimated possessions can differ from audited play-by-play possessions. Offensive rating describes scoring efficiency for this sample and should not be treated as a player rating.
Basketball performance FAQ
Why does eFG% give extra credit to three-pointers?
A made three produces 50% more points than a made two, so the numerator adds half a make for each three.
Why can true shooting differ from eFG%?
True shooting includes scoring and attempts at the free-throw line; eFG% uses field goals only.
Is pace the same as possessions?
No. Pace normalizes estimated possessions to a 48-minute game, while possessions is the estimate for the minutes entered.
