Classify the band before discussing the signed difference

The page first validates lower < midpoint < upper. It then classifies the observation as below, inside, or above the inclusive band, calculates the signed midpoint gap, and scales that gap by the represented class count for an aggregate planning view.

Population match

Benchmark only like with like

Grade, subject, class type, school level, census date, and inclusion rules can change the meaning of class size. Record those definitions rather than comparing a local class with a national average without context.

Band design

Limits should have a reason

A lower and upper bound may represent a policy range, an operational target, or an analytic interval. State which one it is; the calculator does not infer the reason.

  2. Gap = 24 − 22 = +2 students per class.
  3. Aggregate gap = 2 × 14 = +28 students relative to midpoint.
  4. Distance to nearest limit = min(24−18, 26−24) = 2 students per class.
  5. Because 18 ≤ 24 ≤ 26, the observation is inside the benchmark band.
  6. Reverse check: midpoint + gap = 22 + 2 = observed 24.

Result interpretation

Inside the band does not mean no action

An inside-band observation may still be close to the upper limit. A positive gap means above the midpoint; a negative gap means below it. Aggregate gap is a planning quantity, not a count of students to move.

Comparison discipline

Use the source definition before the number

If the benchmark counts special classes differently or uses a different period, a numerical gap can be technically correct but substantively mismatched.

  • It does not estimate learning outcomes or teacher workload from class size alone.

  • It does not calculate uncertainty intervals or sampling error.
