Reading Plan Benchmark Calculator

Compare completion, comprehension, and notes against separate declared benchmarks while preserving the weakest margin.

READING PLAN BENCHMARK

Keep three reading standards visible at once

A reading plan can meet its page target while missing comprehension or synthesis. This benchmark screen keeps each criterion independent and reports the weakest margin before any average.

LIVE DECISION VISUAL

Use the weakest criterion to choose the next adjustment; all-benchmarks-met means the declared numeric thresholds were met, not that the reading was comprehensive or durable.

LIVE CALCULATION PROCESS

Current values from formula to reconciliation

marginᵢ = observedᵢ − benchmarkᵢ; benchmarks met = count(marginᵢ ≥ 0); average margin = Σmarginᵢ ÷ 3

    HOW TO USE

    Set three independent reading checks

    1. Choose the same reading period for completion, comprehension, and notes evidence.
    2. Enter each observed score and its own benchmark from the rubric or planning agreement.
    3. Review each signed margin before looking at the average margin.
    4. Use the weakest criterion to choose a next action; do not let two positive margins hide one negative margin.
    5. Save the benchmark definitions and evidence date with the exported record.

    SUBJECT FUNDAMENTALS

    Three benchmarks answer three questions

    Completion criterion
Whether the assigned reading scope was covered under the stated page rule.
    Comprehension criterion
Whether recall, quiz, explanation, or another check reaches its threshold.
    Notes criterion
Whether annotations or summaries meet the declared synthesis standard.
    Margin
Observed score minus its benchmark, retaining a positive or negative sign.
    Checks met
Count of criteria whose margin is zero or positive.
    Weakest criterion
The criterion with the smallest margin, even when the average margin is positive.

    CALCULATION METHOD

Evaluate each threshold before averaging context

    mᵢ = scoreᵢ − benchmarkᵢchecks met = count(mᵢ ≥ 0)average margin = (m₁ + m₂ + m₃) ÷ 3

Defaults yield margins of +5, +4, and 0 percentage points. Two criteria exceed their benchmarks, one meets it exactly, checks met = 3, and average margin = (5+4+0)÷3 = +3.00 points. The weakest criterion is Notes because its margin is smallest.

    DEEP ANALYSIS

Why the weakest margin controls attention

    Average is context

A positive average can coexist with a failing criterion. The page keeps the average descriptive and refuses to convert it into an all-clear.

    Equality is a decision

A zero margin meets the declared threshold under this rule. If the governing rubric requires a cushion, encode that cushion in the benchmark before calculating.

    Criteria need compatible evidence

Scores from different dates, texts, or reviewers can make the three-margin picture misleading. Match period and definitions first.

    RESULT INTERPRETATION

Use the criterion status, not a color impression

All benchmarks met means each entered score is at or above its own threshold. A below status names how many criteria miss and the weakest one. The chart makes signed direction visible so a small positive bar cannot look equivalent to a large negative bar.

The three markers update from the current scores and benchmarks. The visual is a screening map and can mislead if the benchmark definitions are not comparable.

    EVIDENCE AND DATA LINEAGE

    Record the benchmark source

Retain the rubric revision, reading range, quiz or recall instrument, notes sample, reviewer, and calculation date. A benchmark borrowed from another course is an assumption until its population and purpose match.

    LIMITS AND EXCLUSIONS

    What three thresholds cannot prove

    • Meeting a threshold does not establish durable retention or transfer.
    • The average margin is not a combined grade and should not hide a weak component.
    • The page does not validate the benchmarks or certify an academic outcome.

    TECHNICAL GLOSSARY

    Benchmark vocabulary

    Criterion
    An independently evaluated reading dimension.
    Benchmark
A declared threshold for one criterion.
    Signed margin
Observed value minus threshold, preserving direction.
    Threshold equality
A score exactly at the benchmark, accepted by this rule.
    Weakest margin
The smallest signed distance to a benchmark.
    Screening rule
A transparent first check that may require a deeper review.

    WORKED DECISION CASES

    Keep the action criterion-specific

    Coverage met, comprehension below

The reader finished the pages but missed the recall threshold. The next action is a retrieval or explanation intervention, not a page-count celebration.

    All thresholds met narrowly

Three small positive margins can still be fragile. The user may retain the evidence, repeat the check later, or add a cushion if the decision is consequential.

    IMPORTANT NOTE

Benchmarks must belong to the decision

Do not call a plan successful merely because a convenient threshold was met. Keep the governing purpose and evidence beside the number.

    FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

    Reading Plan Benchmark questions

Why not average the three scores first?

An average can hide a negative criterion. The page evaluates each benchmark before showing an average margin as context.

Does equality count as meeting the benchmark?

Yes for this explicit rule. If your policy requires a cushion, enter a higher benchmark or apply the policy outside the page.

Can the benchmarks use different scales?

Convert each observed measure to a documented 0–100 scale first and retain the conversion rule.

What is the weakest criterion for?

It identifies the smallest margin and helps choose where to investigate or improve next.

    Does all-benchmarks-met mean mastery?

No. It means the entered numeric checks met their thresholds; it does not test every form of learning.
