    Build a schedule from pages and capacity

    1. Enter the complete assignment page count and subtract only pages documented as finished.
    2. Use a measured minutes-per-page rate from a comparable reading task, not a wishful target.
    3. Protect study days and minutes per day after accounting for classes, work, sleep, and travel.
    4. Add weekly review minutes and a buffer for difficult passages, interruptions, and recall.
    5. Use the week rows and capacity margin to decide whether to change pace, scope, review, or deadline.

    What makes a reading schedule credible

    Remaining pages
    Total assigned pages minus pages already read under the same edition and range.
    Minutes per page
    A pace assumption that depends on density, purpose, prior knowledge, and note-taking.
    Review time
    Weekly time for recall, questions, annotation cleanup, or connecting the reading to class.
    Buffer
    An explicit allowance for hard passages and interruptions, applied before weekly allocation.
    Capacity
    Protected study days multiplied by sustainable minutes per day.
    Capacity margin
    Weekly capacity minus weekly reading and review demand.

    CALCULATION METHOD

    Allocate the buffered workload over real weeks

    R = total pages − pages readM = R × minutes/page × (1 + buffer)weekly demand = M ÷ weeks + review minutescapacity = days/week × minutes/day

    Defaults produce R = 270 pages, M = 270×2.5×1.10 = 742.5 minutes, weekly reading = 123.75 minutes, weekly total = 183.75 minutes, and capacity = 5×45 = 225 minutes. The margin is 41.25 minutes/week.

    Schedule choices that change the result

    Pace is not just speed

    A lower minutes-per-page estimate can make the calendar fit while removing the time needed for preview, questions, or recall. Keep the purpose of the reading in the estimate.

    Review is a separate workload

    Review minutes do not disappear because pages are finished. The schedule keeps them visible so a page target does not crowd out memory checks.

    Buffer reveals fragility

    A plan with a small positive margin may still be fragile. Compare the margin with one missed day rather than treating any positive value as robust.

    RESULT INTERPRETATION

    Read the schedule as a capacity test

    A positive margin means the entered weekly demand fits the entered capacity. A negative margin means the plan needs a change. Zero remaining pages is a complete plan, while zero margin is a fragile plan that leaves no recovery time.

    The line chart shows cumulative page milestones; the exact ledger shows the review and buffer assumptions that produce them. The line does not measure comprehension.

    Measure the rate before publishing the calendar

    Sample several pages from the same text and purpose, record whether notes or questions are included, and date the estimate. Keep the deadline, edition, page range, and protected study blocks with the report.

    LIMITS AND EXCLUSIONS

    What the schedule does not promise

    • It does not guarantee that reading time produces a particular grade or retention level.
    • It does not model holidays, illness, changing deadlines, page density by chapter, or accessibility needs unless included in the buffer.
    • It does not decide whether the assigned scope should be reduced.

    Schedule vocabulary

    Buffered minutes
    Reading minutes after the declared allowance is added.
    Protected day
    A day on which study time is realistically available.
    Weekly demand
    Reading plus review time required in one week.
    Capacity margin
    Available weekly minutes left after the modeled demand.
    Milestone
    A planned cumulative page point at the end of a period.
    Fragility
    How little unallocated capacity remains for disruption or harder work.

    WORKED DECISION CASES

    Change the plan explicitly

    Negative margin before a deadline

    A reader can reduce the weekly load by changing the page scope, increase protected days, or ask for a new deadline. The calculator makes the trade-off quantitative.

    Positive but fragile margin

    A 10-minute weekly margin is not a meaningful buffer if one difficult passage consumes 30 extra minutes. The user can raise the buffer or schedule a recovery block.

    A calendar is a hypothesis

    Recalculate when the text, deadline, pace evidence, or available capacity changes. Keep the original snapshot so the change is explainable.

    Reading Plan Study Schedule questions

    Why include a buffer?

    Reading pace varies with density, unfamiliar terms, questions, and interruptions. The buffer makes that uncertainty explicit.

    Can I set pages already read equal to total pages?

    Yes. The page reports an already-complete schedule and zero remaining demand.

    What if weekly demand exceeds capacity?

    Change scope, pace, review, days, or deadline. The page does not silently extend the calendar.

    Does minutes per page include notes?

    Only if your measurement sample included notes. State the boundary and use review minutes for separate synthesis work.

    Is a positive margin enough?

    No. Compare it with realistic disruption and check whether the reading purpose requires deeper engagement.
