    Why the lowest generalized burden may still be rejected

    Tail risk differs from expected delay

    An average delay can hide rare overnight disruptions. Review cancellation and rebooking exposure separately when missing the visit has a large consequence.

    Comfort and accessibility are not time

    A longer direct train may be preferable to a shorter sequence with stairs, security queues, or difficult transfers. Do not force every consideration into the time value.

    Buffers have an opportunity cost

    Arriving early protects the plan but consumes visit or work time. The model makes that reservation visible instead of treating it as free.

    Flight before an important family event

    A higher fare and larger airport buffer may be justified when a missed arrival has a severe consequence. The generalized result is one input to that judgment.

    Overnight rail instead of daytime travel

    Questions about comparing visit travel scenarios

    Why include both expected delay and buffer?

    Expected delay describes anticipated disruption; buffer is a deliberate margin chosen to protect the plan. Combining them would hide why the hours were added.

    Is the time value supposed to equal my hourly wage?

    No. It is a personal decision weight. Wage, after-tax income, fatigue, and lost shared time are different concepts.

    Can a zero time value be used?

    Yes. That reduces the calculation to entered money fares while the time ledger remains visible for qualitative review.

    Why use door-to-door time?

    Terminal-only duration can omit access, parking, security, transfers, waiting, and final local transport that differ materially between modes.

    Does the preferred result predict reliability?

    No. It uses expected delay and buffer inputs but does not model the probability or severity distribution of disruptions.

    Should we always choose the lower burden?

    No. Verify safety, documents, accessibility, cancellation terms, comfort, and the consequences of failure before deciding.
