Advertised tank capacity includes space occupied by glass, substrate, rock, wood, and equipment. Water-change volume should be based on estimated actual water, then translated into safe handling, conditioner, and prepared-water mixing quantities.

Actual-water basis The percentage is applied after displacement.

The default 75-gallon display has 12% displacement and receives a 25% water change.

Worked substitution with the default inputs

Frequently asked questions

Why not use the full advertised gallons?

Substrate and decor mean less water is present than the nominal empty-tank volume.

Does four bucket loads mean 20 gallons are changed?

No. It means three full loads plus one partial load can handle the 16.5-gallon requirement.

Can the target be outside the two source temperatures?

The calculator clamps the blend share; a target outside the source range cannot be achieved by mixing only those sources.
