A bulk feed budget converts animals, daily allowance, feeding days, waste, and price into tonnes and period cost. It does not formulate a nutritionally complete ration, so quantity planning and animal nutrition remain separate decisions.

Calculation method

How the calculation works

Multiply animals, daily allowance, and days, then add the entered waste allowance and price the total feed mass. Multiply animal count by feed per animal per day and feeding days for base feed. Multiply base feed by one plus waste percentage for purchase quantity, multiply by price per kilogram for cost, and divide cost by animal count for period cost per animal.

Frequently asked questions

Should feed allowance be entered as dry matter?

Use the same basis for allowance and price. If the ration is planned on dry matter but feed is bought as-fed, convert moisture consistently before using the calculator.

Does waste percentage include refusals?

It can if that is how the operation defines and measures loss, but storage, handling, and bunk refusals may be better tracked separately.

Why is cost per animal not cost per day?

The displayed value covers the full entered feeding period. Divide by days for an average daily figure if the herd remains constant.

Can this calculator balance a ration?

No. Nutrient requirements and feed analysis require a dedicated ration-balancing process and professional oversight.
