Calculation method

How the calculation works

Divide the target established population by germination and purity, then convert seed count to mass using thousand-seed weight. Multiply field area by target established plants per hectare. Divide by germination as a decimal and by purity as a decimal to obtain seeds required. Divide seed count by 1,000, multiply by thousand-seed weight in grams, and divide by 1,000 for kilograms.

Why does lower germination increase kilograms per hectare?

More seeds must be placed to preserve the same expected established population when a smaller share is expected to germinate.

Is purity the same as germination?

No. Purity concerns how much of the lot is the intended seed; germination concerns the tested ability of that seed to germinate.

Should I add field emergence loss?

If agronomic planning requires it, gross up separately or lower the expected establishment factor; this page currently models germination and purity only.

Can two lots use the same drill setting?

Not necessarily. Different seed size, coating, flow characteristics, and thousand-seed weight can change delivered count.
