Pod counts before maturity can include aborted pods and seeds. The estimate omits moisture discounts, foreign material, field variability, shatter before sampling, grade, basis, drying, storage, and fixed machinery cost.

Why does fewer seeds per pound increase yield?

Fewer seeds per pound means each seed is heavier, so the same seed count weighs more.

Why use harvest plants rather than seeding rate?

Only surviving plants contribute to the observed pod count.

Is a bushel a volume here?

The calculation uses the U.S. standard test weight conversion of 60 pounds per soybean bushel.
