Grains per square metre multiplied by thousand-kernel weight yields mass per area. The 100,000 divisor converts grain-count × grams per thousand grains to tonnes per hectare. Moisture is normalized before harvest loss.

Field method

  1. Average plants and heads across multiple representative quadrats.
  2. Count kernels on randomly selected heads.
  3. Use a cleaned-grain TKW and measured moisture.

Practical examples

Thin stand: reduce plants/m² and raise heads/plant only if tiller counts support it.

Small kernels: test 32 g TKW after heat or drought during grain fill.

Limitations

Preharvest counts may miss sterile florets, uneven stands, lodging, disease, wildlife, combine loss, sampling bias, or later changes in kernel weight. It is a component estimate, not a weighbridge record.

Wheat yield FAQ

Why adjust moisture?

Grain mass changes with water content, so comparing yields requires a common moisture basis.

Why use thousand-kernel weight?

Individual kernels are too light for convenient field calculation; TKW provides a stable mass conversion.

Can heads per plant exceed one?

Yes. Productive tillers can form additional heads, but only grain-bearing heads should be counted.
