How the calculation works

Subtract exclusions from measured linear feet, add an explicit waste allowance, round purchase packages upward, and reconcile purchased coverage, surplus, material, labor, fixed cost, and total project cost. Net run equals measured run minus excluded run. Waste is applied to the net run, whole packages are rounded upward, and labor is charged only to the modeled installed run.

A reliable order starts with wall segments rather than a single room total.

Long walls Assign the longest boards first to reduce visible joints.
Openings Remove clear door widths but retain small returns when trim continues.
Corners Allow enough length for miter or coped cuts.
Offcuts Reuse only pieces long enough for a known remaining segment.

Should door casing be included?

No, unless its linear footage and pricing are intentionally combined with baseboard.

Why is surplus larger than waste?

Does the calculator create a cut plan?

No. It sizes the order; exact stock optimization still requires a wall-by-wall cut list.

Should painted and stained trim use the same allowance?

Not necessarily. Stain-grade matching and visible joints may justify more selective stock.
