How to use

Fit an ordered cabinet schedule into the field-measured wall

  1. Measure finished wall length at the cabinet installation line.
  2. Enter left and right scribes or clearances required by the design and wall condition.
  3. Enter appliance openings from current manufacturer specifications.
  4. List every cabinet width in layout order, including narrow pull-outs and tall units.
  5. Enter the largest total filler the design can accept without creating a poor fit.
  6. Review the exact remaining gap or overrun, then resolve corners, doors, panels, and services on the approved drawing.

Calculation method

Remove fixed openings first, then compare exact module width with usable run

Wall length is reduced by both end clearances and the sum of appliance openings. Cabinet widths sum independently in their entered order. The difference is the filler gap; a negative gap identifies an overrun, a small nonnegative gap may fit the declared filler range, and a larger gap requires layout revision.

Field measurement

Check the wall at more than one height and point

Out-of-plumb corners, bowed walls, uneven finish thickness, protruding trim, and floor variation can change usable space. Retain the controlling measurement and show where it was taken instead of entering the largest convenient dimension.

Operational clearance

A dimensionally fitting box can still conflict in use

Doors and drawers need swing and pull clearance. Appliances require manufacturer gaps, ventilation, electrical or plumbing access, and sometimes adjacent filler. Corner cabinets, handles, walls, islands, and passage widths need separate checks.

Filler strategy

Distribute filler deliberately rather than hiding it in one total

The page checks total filler only. The drawing must assign it to left, right, appliance, or cabinet transitions while preserving door operation, symmetry, finished panels, scribes, and installation sequence. Excessive filler can signal a missing module or outdated measurement.

  1. Wall length = 180 in; end clearances = 1.5 + 1.5 = 3 in.
  2. Appliance openings = 30 + 36 = 66 in.
  3. Usable cabinet run = 180 - 3 - 66 = 111 in.
  4. Cabinet run = 18 + 24 + 30 + 18 + 21 = 111 in.
  5. Filler gap = 111 - 111 = 0 in; cabinet coverage ratio = 100%.
  6. With a 6 in maximum filler, the default lineup fits arithmetically; detailed clearance review remains required.

Result interpretation

Zero gap is exact arithmetic, not necessarily an installable condition

A positive filler gap is space left after the listed modules; a negative value is an overrun. The status compares total gap with the entered filler rule only. It does not account for field tolerances, corner geometry, finished panels, doors, handles, or appliance service clearances.

Decision analysis

Resolve overrun by correcting the layout, not trimming cabinet boxes

Confirm measurements and product dimensions first. Then revise cabinet widths, appliance selection, filler distribution, or end conditions through the designer and supplier. Do not assume a nominal cabinet can be field-cut without affecting construction, warranty, finish, hardware, or performance.

Retain the field dimensions and the exact ordered module list

Keep measurement date, wall identifier, measurement height, plumb and level survey, finish buildup, left and right constraints, appliance manufacturer and model, rough and finished opening requirements, cabinet manufacturer and SKU, actual box widths, fillers, finished panels, corner and door clearances, service locations, designer revision, installer field verification, and approved corrections.

Limits and exclusions

What this one-dimensional fit check omits

  • No height, depth, ceiling, floor, soffit, countertop, or three-dimensional corner geometry.
  • No door swing, drawer pull, handle, appliance door, accessibility, passage, or work-triangle clearance.
  • No wall bow, out-of-plumb condition, finish thickness change, service conflict, or installation tolerance distribution.
  • No structural support, fastening, countertop support, code, or manufacturer compliance.

Final cabinet orders should use approved shop drawings and installer-verified field dimensions. A favorable one-dimensional result does not authorize fabrication when appliance, corner, door, service, or finish conditions remain unresolved.

Should fillers be entered as cabinets?

Can I enter a zero end clearance?

Only when the approved detail and field condition genuinely require none; many walls need scribe or operational space.

Why can 100% coverage still be a problem?

Exact arithmetic leaves no tolerance for irregular walls, finish buildup, or required operating clearance.

Do appliance widths include side clearances?

Use the current manufacturer's required opening, including any specified ventilation or installation clearances.

Can the tool lay out corner cabinets?

No. Corner geometry is two- or three-dimensional and requires an approved plan or shop drawing.
