Estimate a cabinet budget from separate base, wall, and tall cabinet groups instead of treating every linear foot as the same product. Average module widths translate designed runs into whole cabinet boxes, while filler space, panels, trim, installation, and delivery remain visible.

Detailed calculation process

Convert designed cabinet runs into whole modules and installed cost

The default uses a 14 ft base run and 12 ft wall run, 30 in average modules for both groups, two tall cabinets, separate module prices, $1,200 for panels and trim, 18% installation, and $450 delivery.

Worked substitution with the default inputs

1. Round the base run N_b = ceil(12 × 14 / 30) = ceil(5.6) = 6 Six whole base modules represent 180 in, or 15 ft, of nominal width.
2. Round the wall run N_w = ceil(12 × 12 / 30) = ceil(4.8) = 5 Five wall modules represent 150 in, or 12.5 ft.

A live elevation divides the purchased run into cabinet modules and marks included length, waste allowance, and final module surplus.

Limitations and common mistakes

  • Average module width cannot reproduce an exact cabinet schedule or price differences among drawer, sink, corner, appliance, and specialty cabinets.
  • Countertops, appliances, hardware upgrades, lighting, plumbing, electrical work, demolition, tax, and wall repair are not included.
  • Field dimensions, door swings, finished ends, scribes, fillers, panels, crown, toe kick, and installation tolerances must be confirmed before ordering.

Frequently asked questions

Why not price cabinets only by linear foot?

Linear-foot prices hide changes in cabinet type, width, drawer configuration, finished ends, and tall units. This model keeps major groups separate.

Does filler overage mean I should order a wider cabinet?

Not automatically. Use it to revise the schedule or allocate fillers after checking corners, appliance clearances, and field tolerances.

Are countertops included?

No. Countertop area, edge treatment, backsplash, sink cutouts, and installation require a separate takeoff.

Can I enter exact cabinet counts?

Tall cabinets are entered exactly; base and wall groups are estimated from average width. Use a cabinet schedule for final purchasing.
