Drywall purchasing combines net surface area, cutting allowance, sheet geometry, and whole-sheet rounding. This calculator shows the opening deduction and distinguishes waste-adjusted need from actual purchased coverage.

Calculation method

How the calculation works

Subtract entered openings from wall and ceiling area, add a cutting allowance, and round board, screw, and compound quantities from exact sheet dimensions. Subtract openings from wall-plus-ceiling area, multiply by the waste factor, divide by sheet area and round up, then scale accessory quantities by whole sheet count.

Convert finish surfaces into a whole-sheet board and accessory schedule

The defaults cover 240 m² of wall and 90 m² of ceiling, subtract 28 m² of openings, and use 1.2 m by 2.4 m sheets with 12% waste.

General formula: A_net = max(A_wall+A_ceiling-A_open,0); A_req = A_net(1+w); A_sheet = LW; N = ceil(A_req/A_sheet); A_buy = NA_sheet; N_screw = Nk_s; M_comp = Nk_c Openings reduce board coverage before waste. The waste-adjusted area is divided by one sheet area, and the ceiling ensures accessories follow the actual whole-sheet purchase.

Worked substitution with the default inputs

1. Deduct openings: A_net = 240+90-28 = 302.000 m² Doors and windows are removed once from the combined finish surface.
2. Add cutting allowance: w = 12/100 = 0.12; A_req = 302×1.12 = 338.240 m² This is the coverage target before whole-sheet rounding.
3. Calculate sheet geometry: A_sheet = 1.2×2.4 = 2.880 m² Length and width must both be in metres.
4. Round to whole sheets: N = ceil(338.240/2.880) = 118; A_buy = 118×2.880 = 339.840 m² Purchased coverage exceeds net installed area by 37.840 m².
