Flooring orders must cover net room area, directional and base waste, whole boxes, and an optional reserve. This calculator multiplies the two waste factors rather than simply adding percentages, then makes box rounding and leftover explicit.

How the calculation works

Calculate net rectangular floor area, compound base and pattern allowances, round to whole boxes, and keep repair reserve and leftover coverage separate. Subtract excluded area, multiply base and pattern factors, divide by box coverage and round up, add reserve boxes, and price the final box count.

Move from floor geometry through compounded waste to whole boxes

The defaults model an 8.4 m by 5.6 m room, 2.5 m² excluded area, 8% base waste, 5% pattern extra, and 2.2 m² per box.

General formula: A_g = LW; A_n = max(A_g-A_x,0); f = (1+w_b)(1+w_p); A_req = A_n f; N_i = ceil(A_req/A_box); N_total = N_i+N_res; A_buy=N_total A_box The two waste percentages compound because the pattern factor acts on the base-adjusted coverage. Installation need is rounded to whole boxes before the deliberate reserve is added.

Worked substitution with the default inputs

1. Calculate floor geometry: A_g = 8.4×5.6 = 47.040 m²; A_n = 47.040-2.500 = 44.540 m² The excluded zone is removed before waste.
2. Compound the two allowances: f = 1.08×1.05 = 1.134; combined allowance = 13.400% Multiplying yields 13.4%, not the simple 13.0% sum.
3. Calculate required coverage: A_req = 44.540×1.134 = 50.508360 m² This is the installation purchase target before box rounding.
4. Round and add reserve: N_i = ceil(50.508360/2.2) = 23 boxes; N_total = 23+1 = 24 boxes The reserve box is added after installation rounding.
5. Check coverage and cost: A_buy = 24×2.2 = 52.800 m²; leftover = 52.800-44.540 = 8.260 m²; cost = 24×68 = 1,632 Leftover includes the intentional waste and reserve coverage.

The default floor needs 23 installation boxes plus one reserve, purchasing 52.800 m² for 1,632 and leaving 8.260 m² beyond net floor area.
