How to use

Take off one compatible pipe family without pooling incompatible leftovers

  1. List each developed run separately for one material, size, and pressure or service class.
  2. Enter the purchasable stock length.
  3. Enter trim or fit loss at each stock end.
  4. Apply a documented piece allowance after every route is rounded.
  5. Enter the actual pieces per vendor bundle.

Calculation method

Round routes before applying allowance and bundle purchasing

Usable stock length is the nominal piece length less the entered loss at both ends. Each route requires the ceiling of route length divided by usable stock. Route piece counts are summed, the order allowance is applied to pieces, and vendor bundle rounding creates purchased quantity. Couplings count only joints between pieces within each run.

Reuse boundary

Nominal surplus is not automatically reusable

Offcuts may be too short, contaminated, damaged, unapproved for a location, or incompatible with the next run. Do not subtract theoretical surplus from another size, material, system, or certification class.

Fitting boundary

Couplings are not the complete fitting schedule

The page counts only internal joints created when a listed run needs multiple stock pieces. Elbows, tees, reducers, adapters, unions, valves, cleanouts, terminations, and equipment connections require a drawing takeoff.

Installation depth

Socket insertion and fitting takeoff rules can change developed demand

Some systems measure cut length between fitting stops; others use center-to-center dimensions with fitting takeoff deductions. Use the manufacturer and trade method appropriate to the joint system rather than treating end trim as a universal rule.

  1. 20 ft stock less two 1.5 in end losses gives 19.75 ft usable.
  2. Runs 42, 31, 18, and 55 ft require 3, 2, 1, and 3 pieces.
  3. Base pieces = 9; internal run couplings = 2 + 1 + 0 + 2 = 5.
  4. A 10% piece allowance gives 9.9, rounded to 10 order pieces.
  5. Ten pieces per bundle gives one bundle and 200 nominal purchased feet.
  6. Nominal usable surplus = 10×19.75 − 146 = 51.5 ft.

Result interpretation

Use coupling count to expose route fragmentation

More pieces can increase joints, labor, leak points, supports, and inspection effort even when purchased footage changes little. Review the route-level ledger before choosing stock length.

Decision analysis

Separate stock optimization from field feasibility

Long stock can reduce joints but may be difficult to transport or maneuver. Short stock can improve handling but add couplings. Select stock using material limits, access, approved joints, labor, delivery, and safe handling.

Keep drawing revision, route identifiers, developed lengths, material, size, schedule or dimension ratio, service class, stock length, cut and insertion rules, allowance basis, bundle contents, fitting schedule, offcut-reuse rule, supplier, estimator, date, and exact run ledger.

Limits and exclusions

What the stock takeoff omits

  • No hydraulic, code, pressure, temperature, material, or sizing decision.
  • No elbows, tees, valves, adapters, supports, insulation, sleeves, firestops, or equipment connections.
  • No mixed sizes or materials in one calculation.
  • No optimized cutting pattern, guaranteed offcut reuse, labor, price, or delivery plan.

Route separation changes what can be reused

Open straight corridor

Long stock may reduce joints and use surplus efficiently when delivery, handling, and approved joint spacing allow it.

Congested renovation rooms

Access openings and frequent offsets can force shorter cuts; theoretical long offcuts may not match the remaining routes.

Frequently asked questions

Why list runs separately?

Each run must be buildable; leftover length from one route cannot erase the minimum pieces required for another.

Why subtract loss at both ends?

The model assumes an entered trim or fit loss on both ends of each stock piece.

Are coupling quantities exact?

Only for internal straight-piece joints; all other fittings require a layout takeoff.

Can I mix pipe sizes?

No. Run one calculation for each compatible material, size, schedule, and service class.

Does allowance apply to footage or pieces?

This model applies it to the route-rounded piece count before bundle rounding.

Why can surplus be large?

Separate route ceilings and whole-bundle purchasing can create real nominal overage.
