Convert plan area into field, starter, and ridge bundles

The default uses 1,500 ft² horizontal plan area, a 6:12 pitch, 120 ft² additional sloped area, 40 ft² excluded area, and 12% field waste.

Worked substitution with the default inputs

1. Convert plan area to the roof slope f_p = sqrt(1 + (6/12)^2) = 1.118034A_main = 1,500 × 1.118034 = 1,677.05 ft² The 6:12 rise makes the roof plane larger than its horizontal footprint.
2. Build the net field requirement A_net = 1,677.05 + 120 - 40 = 1,757.05 ft²A_waste = 1,757.05 × 12% = 210.85 ft²A_req = 1,967.90 ft² Added and excluded sloped areas are reconciled before the field waste allowance.

  • A 1,500 ft² plan at 6:12 pitch uses a 1.1180 slope factor, producing 1,677.05 ft² of main sloped area.
  • After adding 120 ft² and excluding 40 ft², the default net field area is 1,757.05 ft²; 12% waste raises the requirement to 1,967.90 ft².
  • At 33.3 ft² per field bundle, the field order is 60 bundles, plus one starter bundle and two ridge bundles.

Before relying on the result

Limitations and common mistakes

  • Pitch conversion does not replace measuring individual roof planes, hips, valleys, dormers, sidewalls, or irregular geometry.
  • Underlayment, ice barrier, flashing, ventilation, nails, drip edge, valley products, and damaged decking are not included.
  • Bundle coverage and accessory coverage must come from the exact manufacturer product and installation method.

Frequently asked questions

Why not multiply all roof area by one waste factor and stop there?

The result still must be rounded to field bundles, while starter and ridge products use separate linear coverage.

Should valleys be added as ridge length?

No. Valley material and its cut waste should follow the selected valley detail and product instructions.

Does the pitch factor work for every roof?

It converts a uniform-pitch horizontal plan area. Mixed pitches and irregular planes should be measured separately.

Are bundles the same as roofing squares?

No. A square is 100 ft² of roof coverage; the number of bundles per square depends on the product.
