Estimate field siding from rectangular wall area plus triangular gables, subtract accepted openings, add a project-specific cut allowance, and round to whole cartons. Corner trim and installation labor remain separate from field coverage.

Build a facade takeoff from walls, gables, openings, cartons, and trim

The default uses 2,400 ft² of rectangular wall, a combined 40 ft gable base with 8 ft rise, 320 ft² of openings, 12% field waste, 100 ft² cartons, and 80 ft of corner trim in 10 ft pieces.

Worked substitution with the default inputs

1. Calculate the gable A_g = 40×8/2 = 160 ft² The combined triangular gable allowance adds 160 ft².
2. Find net facade area A_gross = 2,400 + 160 = 2,560 ft²A_net = 2,560 - 320 = 2,240 ft² Accepted door and window deductions are removed before waste.
3. Add field waste A_waste = 2,240×12% = 268.8 ft²A_req = 2,508.8 ft² The adjusted requirement includes cutting, laps, and pattern loss.

  • The single gable base and rise represent a combined triangular allowance; complex roofs need individual gable measurements.
  • Profile exposure, laps, panel direction, color matching, minimum orders, and offcut reuse are not automatically modeled.
  • Trim shown here covers entered corner length only, not openings, transitions, soffits, fascia, or penetrations.

Frequently asked questions

Should every opening be subtracted?

No. Small openings can create enough surrounding cuts that suppliers recommend little or no deduction.

Why is trim not included in carton coverage?

Corner trim is a different product purchased by linear stock length.

Does waste include carton surplus?

No. Waste is entered deliberately; surplus is created by whole-carton rounding.

Does this calculate housewrap?

No. Housewrap, flashing, tapes, fasteners, and opening trim need separate quantities.
