Practical examples
- A 600 mm by 300 mm tile covers 0.18 m2 before allowing for grout joints or manufacturing tolerance.
- A 38 m2 surface with 10% waste requires coverage for 41.8 m2, or 233 whole tiles at 0.18 m2 each.
- With eight tiles per box, 233 tiles round to 30 boxes; those boxes contain 240 tiles and provide a small rounding reserve.

Useful tips
- Measure alcoves, returns, shower walls, and separate rooms as distinct rectangles instead of forcing one rough average.
- Increase waste for diagonal layouts, herringbone patterns, many corners, large-format tiles, or fragile natural stone.
- Keep unopened attic stock from the same dye lot for future repairs; do not assume a later batch will match.

Limitations and common mistakes
- The model treats the entered tile face as full coverage and does not deduct grout-joint width from the module.
- Borders, mosaics, pattern repeats, book-matching, stair nosings, trims, adhesive, grout, membranes, and labor are not priced.
- Manufacturer box coverage and installer layout should override a dimension-only estimate when they differ.

Frequently asked questions
Should grout joints reduce the tile quantity?
Usually not in a simple purchasing estimate. Supplier box coverage already reflects the product system more reliably than subtracting every joint manually.
Can I subtract doors and windows?
Subtract large untiled openings, but small openings can create extra cutting and may not reduce the order by their full area.
Why are tiles and boxes both rounded up?
A fraction of a tile cannot cover a final cut, and most suppliers sell only complete boxes.
Is 10% waste always enough?
No. Layout, room shape, tile fragility, pattern repeat, installer practice, and desired repair stock determine the appropriate allowance.
