CALCULATION METHOD

How the calculator reaches the result

Normalized section score = earned ÷ maximum × 100; weighted score = Σ(normalized score × weight ÷ 100).

The model checks that each score fits its maximum and that weights total 100%, then keeps normalized score and weighted contribution visible for reconciliation.

    A zero-maximum section is invalid because its percentage cannot be normalized.

    Why can weighted and simple averages differ?

    Weights assign influence independently of section point counts, so the two averages answer different questions.

    Must weights total 100%?

    Yes for a complete weighted result; otherwise the missing weight has no defined destination.

    Can a section score exceed its maximum?

    Not in a standard points rubric. Enter bonus points separately only if the policy defines how they are capped.

    What if one section is dropped?

    Remove it and redistribute weights only according to the documented policy.

    Why show normalized scores?

    They make the calculation understandable when sections use different maximum point totals.

    Is this official?

    No. Reconcile the result with the rubric or gradebook export that controls the quiz.
