How to use

Plan the release to paint, not just the hanging shift

  1. Enter net wall and ceiling board areas for the drywall scope.
  2. Enter the crew size and productive workday used for all labor conversions.
  3. Use observed or bid-based hanging, finishing, and sanding productivity in ft² per labor-hour.
  4. Enter the required finish-coat count for the specified level.
  5. Enter expected elapsed drying time per coat for the actual product and site conditions.
  6. Add only documented inspection or access holds, then review productive and elapsed clocks separately.

Calculation method

Convert each production phase to labor-hours before dividing by crew capacity

Hanging uses total board area divided by hanging productivity. Finishing multiplies that area by coat count before division by per-coat productivity. Sanding uses its own rate. The sum becomes productive crew-days; drying and inspection remain elapsed days added after the labor conversion.

Coat count must follow the specification

A Level 4 residential finish, a Level 5 critical-lighting finish, a fire-taping scope, and a temporary partition are not interchangeable. Record the finish requirement, board type, corner treatment, and inspection criteria behind the entered coat count.

Drying conditions

Clock time is product- and climate-dependent

Compound type, thickness, temperature, humidity, ventilation, substrate moisture, and successive coat timing determine drying. Use the manufacturer’s conditions or observed project evidence rather than assuming every coat dries overnight.

Crew scaling

More workers do not divide every phase equally

The arithmetic assumes entered labor productivity remains valid at the selected crew size. Congestion, scaffold limits, lift access, room fragmentation, tool availability, and trade handoffs can cap useful crew growth; drying remains unchanged.

  2. Hanging labor: 2,400 / 30 = 80 labor-hours.
  3. Finishing labor: 2,400 × 3 / 45 = 160 labor-hours.
  4. Sanding labor: 2,400 / 120 = 20 labor-hours.
  5. Productive time: 260 / (3 × 8) = 10.83 crew-days.
  6. Drying and hold: 3 × 18 / 24 + 0.5 = 2.75 elapsed days; total = 13.58 days.

Result interpretation

Ready-for-paint is a defined handoff milestone

The result assumes phases are sequential and the entered rates represent total labor-hours. It does not mean the room is occupied, inspected for every code requirement, trimmed, primed, or free from touch-up. Define the receiving trade’s acceptance criteria before using the date.

Decision analysis

Find the controlling clock before adding crew

If productive crew-days dominate, labor planning may matter. If drying and inspection dominate, extra hangers will not proportionally advance paint release. Run documented alternatives for compound type, ventilation, work zones, and crew composition rather than applying a blanket acceleration factor.

Long uninterrupted walls may support the entered high production rates. A larger crew can reduce productive days, provided lifts, material flow, and inspection zones scale with it.

Occupied renovation

Small rooms, protection, daily cleanup, restricted hours, and isolated drying conditions can make elapsed access and cure time more important than nominal square-foot rates.

Why is drying added after crew-days?

Drying is elapsed dependency time, not productive labor. A worker can leave the room, but the next coat still waits for the required condition.

Can phases overlap between rooms?

Yes, but this page uses a conservative sequential scope. Model separate zones if work fronts genuinely overlap.

Does a larger crew always shorten the duration?

No. The formula divides labor-hours, but congestion, access, tools, and handoffs may reduce actual productivity.

What does ready for paint mean?

It is the entered planning handoff after finishing, drying, sanding, and declared holds—not proof of primer or finish acceptance.

Should every finish coat use the same rate?

Only if the recorded method supports it. Base coats, fill coats, skim coats, and touch-up can have different productivity.

Can I use calendar days as workdays?
