Calculation method

Price area, not an unexplained centerline-foot average

Rectangular surface equals perimeter times length. Round surface equals circumference times length. Sheet metal is priced on allowed order area, while insulation is priced on net surface. Fittings use an entered percentage of sheet cost only as a planning allowance; a fabrication takeoff should replace it when available.

Straight surface excludes fitting development

Transitions, elbows, offsets, branches, taps, end caps, access doors, dampers, plenums, reinforcement, seams, connectors, and joint systems require separate quantities or an evidenced allowance.

Specification boundary

Equal area does not mean equal fabrication cost

Pressure class, gauge, reinforcement, leakage class, material, coating, liner, insulation, joint system, shop standards, and testing can change cost even when exposed surface is identical.

Labor depth

Field labor should retain access and coordination

Height, congestion, lifts, hangers, penetrations, firestopping, phasing, controls, testing, balancing, demolition, and occupied conditions are not captured by surface alone. Enter labor hours from comparable scope.

  1. Rectangular perimeter = 2(24+14)/12 = 6.333 ft; surface = 1,140 ft².
  2. Round circumference = π×12/12 = 3.142 ft; surface = 298.451 ft².
  3. Net surface = 1,438.451 ft²; 12% allowance gives 1,611.065 order ft².
  4. Sheet and insulation costs use their separate area bases.
  5. Fitting allowance equals 28% of sheet cost; labor equals 190×$82.
  6. Add equipment, then 7% contingency once to obtain total cost.

Result interpretation

Challenge the largest layer first

If labor dominates, validate access and productivity. If sheet cost dominates, validate geometry, pressure class, gauge, reinforcement, and allowance. If the fitting allowance is material, replace the percentage with a fitting schedule.

Compare bids only after normalizing scope

Confirm whether insulation, liner, hangers, dampers, access doors, fire/smoke systems, controls, testing, balancing, lifts, freight, tax, permits, demolition, and closeout are included.

No. Gauge and reinforcement come from the governing duct construction specification.

Why price insulation on net area?

The default assumes insulation covers installed skin rather than fabrication scrap.
