How to use

Reconcile product label coverage with the measured zones that actually need insulation

  1. Enter every zone area separately so the takeoff can be audited.
  2. Enter only legitimate non-insulated exclusions such as a defined access platform.
  3. Apply a documented cutting, handling, or installation allowance.
  4. Use the package coverage for the selected product at the target R-value, depth, and density.
  5. Enter the bags already available or proposed for purchase.
  6. Review required bags, available coverage, balance, and zone ledger; then verify installed quality in the field.

Calculation method

Preserve zones, deduct once, apply allowance once, and round to whole bags

The model sums positive zone records, subtracts the entered exclusion, applies one percentage to the remaining net area, and divides by the product coverage per bag before rounding upward. Available bags use the same coverage basis so the reported balance is comparable.

Product-label boundary

Coverage changes with the thermal target

Loose-fill bag charts, batt package areas, board dimensions, and spray yields are not interchangeable. For many products, higher R-value or greater depth means less area per package. Record the exact line from the current product data.

Installation-quality boundary

Adequate bags do not prove effective coverage

Gaps, compression, low density, uneven depth, voids around wiring and pipes, wind washing, thermal bridges, moisture, and missing air control can reduce performance even when the nominal bag count matches the arithmetic.

Zone evidence

Do not let one total erase inaccessible or special areas

Separate flat attic, sloped ceiling, kneewall, rim joist, floor, wall, and access-platform zones when their product, depth, density, or installation method differs. Run another calculation rather than averaging unlike assemblies.

  1. Gross zones: 500 + 420 + 360 = 1,280 ft².
  2. Net measured area: 1,280 − 80 = 1,200 ft².
  3. Required order basis: 1,200 × 1.08 = 1,296 ft².
  4. Required bags: ceil(1,296 / 75) = 18.
  5. Available coverage: 18 × 75 = 1,350 ft².
  6. Nominal balance: 1,350 − 1,296 = +54 ft², subject to installed-depth and quality verification.

Result interpretation

Status applies only to nominal area at the entered label yield

“Nominal coverage available” means the entered bags multiply to at least the required order area. It does not mean the installed assembly reaches the target R-value or is free of gaps, compression, moisture, air leakage, or thermal bridging.

Decision analysis

Use a shortfall to fix the order and a surplus to inspect assumptions

A shortfall calls for additional compatible product or a revised measured scope. A large surplus may indicate conservative allowance, package rounding, an incorrect label yield, or omitted zones. Reconcile it before reducing the order.

Keep measured zone identifiers, dimensions, exclusions and their purpose, assembly type, climate or code target, product manufacturer and SKU, R-value, depth and density target, coverage chart revision, allowance rationale, bags installed, bag labels, depth markers, coverage photos, gaps and compression inspection, baffles, dams, air-sealing evidence, and accepted corrections.

Why enter zones separately?

Separate records expose omitted areas and preserve the takeoff for field reconciliation.

Can I deduct framing area?

Only if the product coverage and takeoff method are defined that way; framing also creates thermal bridges rather than disappearing from the assembly.

Why does R-value affect bag coverage?

Higher targets commonly require more installed material per square foot, reducing package coverage.

Does extra nominal area correct gaps?

No. Material must be installed to the required fit, depth, and density in each zone.

Can different products share one calculation?

Use separate calculations when coverage basis, target, depth, density, or installation method differs.

What should I do with a positive balance?

Verify measurements and label yield, then treat the remainder according to package return, contingency, and field-quality needs.
