How to use

Compare products only after freezing the same area and thermal target

  1. Measure the common insulated area and exclude zones that require a different assembly.
  2. Enter one target R-value that both product coverages actually reference.
  3. Read each package coverage from the current label at that target, not from a different depth.
  4. Enter separate allowances, package prices, productivity rates, and labor rates for A and B.
  5. Review whole-package rounding, material cost, labor hours, and installed total separately.
  6. Confirm ventilation, air sealing, fire clearances, moisture, and installed quality before choosing an option.

Calculation method

Round packages before pricing, but do not round labor hours inside the model

For each option, measured area receives its own allowance and is divided by that option's coverage per package. Packages round upward because partial packages cannot satisfy the order. Labor hours use measured area divided by productivity, then multiply by labor rate. The two cost totals share the same scope but preserve different assumptions.

Thermal equivalence

Coverage must refer to the same installed condition

Do not compare a low-depth package yield with another product's high-R yield. R-value depends on material, thickness, and sometimes installed density. If one option is continuous insulation and the other is cavity insulation, code and assembly effects may differ even when the nominal R-value is equal.

Labor evidence

Productivity belongs to the actual access and method

Open attic blowing, dense-pack wall work, fitted batts, rigid boards, and spray products require different equipment and preparation. Use an estimate, crew record, or contractor quote that matches the location, obstructions, setup, and verification included in the comparison.

Decision boundary

The lower modeled cost is not automatically the better assembly

Material availability, air-control continuity, vapor behavior, fire protection, ventilation, compression, settlement, embodied impacts, future access, and installer qualifications can govern the decision. Use this page to reconcile arithmetic after the assembly and product choices are technically acceptable.

Result interpretation

Read cost and labor leaders as two separate findings

A negative B-minus-A cost means B is cheaper; a positive value means A is cheaper. The labor difference uses the same sign convention. Package surplus is nominal label coverage beyond the order area and is not proof of installed thermal continuity.

Professional decision

Investigate the driver before accepting a large gap

A large difference may come from package rounding, a mismatched target-R label line, a quote that excludes setup, or productivity recorded under unlike access. Reconcile those drivers with the supplier and installer instead of treating the calculator as an automatic award recommendation.

Retain the exact product and quote basis for both options

Keep zone measurements, assembly location, target R-value, product manufacturer and SKU, coverage chart revision, depth and density, allowance rationale, package price date, labor inclusions, productivity source, crew conditions, setup and cleanup scope, ventilation plan, air-sealing scope, installer qualification, and field acceptance records.

  • No correction for gaps, compression, settlement, moisture, wind washing, or thermal bridging.

  • No guarantee that nominally equal R-values create equal whole-building performance.

Frequently asked questions

Why must both options use the same target R-value?

Otherwise package coverage and thermal intent are not comparable.

Can I use R-value per inch instead of package coverage?

Use the exact product coverage or quantity instruction whenever available; R per inch alone does not establish package yield.

Why are packages rounded before cost?

Purchase quantities are discrete, so the supplier invoice reflects whole packages rather than an unrounded fraction.

Does lower labor time mean faster completion?

Not necessarily. Setup, equipment, cure, access, inspections, and other trades may control elapsed duration.

Should rebates reduce package price?

Keep gross project cost and incentive eligibility separate unless the rebate amount and requirements are verified.

Can the calculator choose between spray foam and fiber insulation?

Only after a qualified assessment confirms that both assemblies are acceptable for the location, moisture strategy, fire protection, and code requirements.
